Kate to Join William at 2026 Earthshot Prize in Mumbai, First Joint Overseas Trip Since Cancer Treatment

William, Prince of Wales, is preparing for one of the biggest joint engagements of his marriage, with the Princess of Wales set to accompany him to India in November 2026 for the Earthshot Prize ceremony in Mumbai, according to the Daily Mirror. The trip will mark Kate's first joint official overseas visit with William since her 2024 cancer diagnosis and the chemotherapy treatment that followed, the outlet reported.

The Earthshot Prize, William's environmental initiative launched in 2020, has become one of the defining projects of his public life. Royal editor Russell Myers, author of the biography William and Catherine: The Intimate Inside Story, told the Mirror that Kate was instrumental in the prize's creation, describing her as "the catalyst for William launching the Earthshot Prize, when he doubted it could become the global success it has." Myers said the couple's approach to their public roles is defined by mutual support, both as working royals and as parents to their three children, Prince George, 13, Princess Charlotte, 11, and Prince Louis, 8.

William's environmental advocacy was on public display last month when he posted a message on X addressing wildfires that swept across France, Spain and the UK amid record-breaking heat. "Our thoughts are with everyone affected by the devastating wildfires across France, Spain and the UK," he wrote, thanking "the firefighters, emergency services and volunteers working tirelessly in extraordinarily difficult conditions." He added that the fires were "a stark reminder of the challenges posed by an increasingly extreme climate and the importance of protecting both people and nature."

Former BBC royal correspondent Jennie Bond told the Mirror that Kate shares William's convictions on the subject rather than simply supporting him out of duty. "They are completely aligned in their love of nature and their belief in the climate crisis facing the world," Bond said. "It's not just that she feels she should support her husband. The natural world, the fresh air we hope to keep on breathing and the delicate balance of preserving our planet are just as key to Catherine as they are to William. And that's one of the many reasons why they make such a great team."

The dynamic runs in both directions, according to Bond, who pointed to William's role in backing Kate's early years development work. "We've seen William supporting Catherine with her early years work, happily taking a back seat, but being there to show his belief in her campaign. And she does the same for William," Bond said. "They are partners and far more equal partners than many future kings and queens before them." Myers noted that Kate's early years initiative has "made huge strides" over the past couple of years, and that she has been closely involved not just in her own causes but in shaping the broader direction the monarchy is likely to take once William and Kate eventually become king and queen.

A Chance For Renewal After The Caribbean Tour

The Mumbai trip carries significance beyond the environmental cause itself. Kate's return to a major joint international tour follows what the Mirror described as a successful comeback to overseas duties earlier this year, including a visit to Reggio Emilia in Italy tied to her early years research. Myers called the India trip "such a huge milestone, not only for her, but for the couple together," noting it will come nearly four years after William and Kate travelled together to Boston for the 2022 Earthshot Prize ceremony, and even longer since their tour of the Caribbean, which drew controversy at the time.

"This is a chance of renewal for both of them and when they are together on the international stage, there is no doubt they have a far bigger impact," Myers said, adding that undertaking the trip "at a time of immense diplomatic sensitivity" reflects well on the couple's future roles. He suggested the royal family, and Britain more broadly, has been missing that combined international presence while Kate focused on her recovery and reduced public schedule.

According to the Mirror, William and Kate are also expected to spend time in Delhi during the visit at the request of the UK government, though full details of the itinerary have not been finalized. The Earthshot Prize ceremony itself recognizes individuals and organizations working on environmental solutions, and past ceremonies have been held in London and Boston before the event moves to Mumbai for its 2026 edition.

Bond suggested the couple's shared environmental focus is likely to extend to their children as they grow older, pointing to the influence of William's own upbringing. "William was brought up by a father and grandfather who were way ahead of their time in recognising climate change and the harm we humans are doing to our planet," she said, referring to King Charles and the late Prince Philip, both known for decades of environmental advocacy before it became mainstream. She indicated that Prince George and his siblings appear likely to follow that same path given how central the cause has become to their parents' work.

For now, attention turns to the months ahead as William and Kate resume their full working schedules following the summer break. The Mumbai ceremony in November 2026 will be the clearest test yet of how the Prince and Princess of Wales intend to project their partnership on the world stage, at a moment when, as Myers put it, their joint appearances carry weight precisely because they have been rarer in recent years.
