Hayden Panettiere, Ex-Fiancée of Wladimir Klitschko, Dies at 36

Actress Hayden Panettiere, known for her roles in the television series Heroes and Nashville, has died at the age of 36, her father Skip Panettiere confirmed in a statement to ABC News. Panettiere was previously engaged to former heavyweight boxing champion Wladimir Klitschko, with whom she shares a daughter, and news of her death has drawn renewed attention to her years-long relationship with the Ukrainian sports icon.

"With deep sadness we announce the tragic death of our beloved Hayden," the family statement read, as quoted by ABC News and cited by German outlets including Spiegel and Bild. "She was an incredible light and force of nature who brought immeasurable love and joy to all who knew her and the millions who watched her on screen." Skip Panettiere asked for privacy, saying the family needed time to process what he called an unimaginable loss. A cause of death has not been released. According to the celebrity news outlet TMZ, Panettiere died on Sunday evening, though this has not been independently confirmed by other outlets.

Panettiere's career began remarkably early. She appeared in television commercials as a one-year-old, according to Welt, and moved into professional acting roles by the mid-1990s. She lent her voice to the character Dot in the 1998 animated film A Bug's Life and appeared in the films Remember the Titans in 2000 and Scream 4 in 2011. Her breakout role came as Claire Bennet, a cheerleader with superhuman healing abilities, in the NBC science-fiction drama Heroes, which ran from 2006 to 2010 and made her one of the most recognizable faces on American television. She later starred as aspiring country singer Juliette Barnes in the musical drama Nashville, a performance that earned her two Golden Globe nominations, according to Bild.

Her relationship with Klitschko, one of the most decorated heavyweight boxers of his generation, began in 2009. According to Welt, the couple were together from 2009 to 2011 and again from 2013 to 2018, and were engaged for part of that time. Their daughter, Kaya Evdokia, was born on December 9, 2014. The couple separated in August 2018, and Spiegel reported that their daughter has since been raised primarily by her father in Europe. Welt further reported that in her memoir published this year, Panettiere wrote about her decision to grant Klitschko sole custody of their daughter.

That memoir, titled This Is Me: A Reckoning, was released in May and offered an unusually candid account of Panettiere's life away from the screen. According to Spiegel, she wrote in the book about the toll of early fame, her experience of motherhood, her struggles with mental health and drug addiction, and the death of her younger brother, Jansen Panettiere, who died in February 2023 at age 28. Welt reported that Panettiere spoke openly for years about her battles with alcohol dependency and depression, including postpartum depression she experienced after Kaya's birth in 2014.

A Public Life Under Constant Scrutiny

Panettiere's decades in the public eye meant that her personal struggles were often chronicled alongside her professional achievements. She had discussed her mental health challenges in numerous interviews over the years, using her platform to speak candidly about postpartum depression at a time when the topic received less mainstream attention in celebrity media. Her relationship with Klitschko, given his prominence as a world heavyweight champion and later a public figure in Ukraine, kept the couple under significant media attention throughout their on-and-off relationship, particularly following the birth of their daughter.

Friends and colleagues in the entertainment industry had long described Panettiere as a performer who balanced blockbuster visibility with a willingness to discuss difficult personal experiences publicly. Her memoir, released just months before her death, was widely seen as the culmination of that openness, addressing subjects ranging from fame's psychological toll to the grief of losing her brother.

Tributes and Unanswered Questions

As of the initial reporting by ABC News, Spiegel, Bild and Welt, no official cause of death had been disclosed, and the family's statement did not address the circumstances surrounding her passing. TMZ's report placing her death on Sunday evening had not been corroborated by other major outlets at the time these reports were published, leaving some details of the timeline unclear.

The family's request for privacy suggests further details may not emerge immediately. What is confirmed across all reporting is the scope of Panettiere's career, spanning child modeling, animated voice work, teen films, and two prominent television dramas, as well as her enduring connection to Klitschko through their daughter. Fans and colleagues reacting to the news have pointed to her performances in Heroes and Nashville as defining a generation of American television, while her memoir now stands as one of the more detailed personal accounts left by a star of her era.

Panettiere is survived by her daughter Kaya Evdokia, now approaching her tenth birthday, who has been living with her father, Wladimir Klitschko. No memorial service details had been announced in the initial statements from the family or reported by ABC News, Bild, Spiegel, or Welt.
