The event was held at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California, according to ABC News. The Disney Legends Awards capped off D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event. That biennial exposition is the company's largest to date, according to The Walt Disney Company.
Ryan Seacrest, host of American Idol, returned for another year to emcee the ceremony. He told the crowd that the honorees' creativity, innovation and commitment to bringing joy to audiences "has made them the stuff of legend," according to a statement from The Walt Disney Company.
Hathaway was recognized more than two decades after her Disney debut. She played Mia Thermopolis in 2001's The Princess Diaries. She reprised the role in the 2004 sequel, The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement. She later starred as the White Queen in Alice in Wonderland and Alice Through the Looking Glass. The Devil Wears Prada 2 director David Frankel presented Hathaway with her award. He praised her dedication to her craft. Vogue editor Anna Wintour delivered a special video tribute, per The Walt Disney Company.
In her acceptance speech, Hathaway called herself lucky. She expressed gratitude for a life spent doing work she loves alongside her husband and children. "As cool as all this is, just us being us is where I'm happiest," she said, according to ABC News.

Tributes came from Robert Downey Jr., Diane Sawyer, Harrison Ford, Ellen Pompeo and sportscaster Al Michaels. Pompeo told Iger, "It's your integrity and your kindness that will be your legacy forever."
Accepting the award, Iger reflected on an executive's responsibility to support the creative talent that drives the company. He thanked the creatives and cast members he said truly make Disney what it is. Iger led The Walt Disney Company for more than two decades. During that time, the company acquired Pixar, Marvel, Lucasfilm and 21st Century Fox. It also launched the Disney+ streaming service, ABC News noted.
