Disney Confirms Kingdom Hearts Is a $1 Billion Franchise Ahead of D23 Livestream Panel

Disney has confirmed that Kingdom Hearts has become one of the company's nine game franchises to gross over $1 billion at retail, a revelation timed just days before a dedicated Kingdom Hearts panel at this weekend's D23 event, according to GamesRadar+.

Sean Shoptaw, Disney's executive vice president of global games, disclosed the milestone while discussing the company's broader gaming strategy, noting that Disney holds nine titles that have each crossed the $1 billion retail threshold. Shoptaw did not name every franchise on that list, but he specifically singled out Kingdom Hearts and Marvel Strike Force as examples, GamesRadar+ reported. He also stressed the importance of what he called telling truly original stories that are unique to games as a medium.

The timing has not gone unnoticed by fans who plan to tune into coverage of D23, many of whom will follow the weekend's panels through photos, social posts and any available D23 livestream coverage rather than attending in person at the Anaheim Convention Center. Kingdom Hearts, developed by Square Enix, has spent roughly 24 years and 13 games blending original anime-style protagonists with Disney's most iconic worlds and characters. GamesRadar+ noted that given that history, the series likely crossed the $1 billion mark some time ago, but this appears to be the first instance of Disney publicly crediting the franchise with that figure.

The billion-dollar announcement lands directly ahead of The Deep Dive into Kingdom Hearts, a panel dedicated entirely to the franchise at this year's D23. According to both GamesRadar+ and TheGamer, the series' co-director and members of its voice cast are confirmed to appear at the session, feeding speculation that Disney and Square Enix are preparing to show new material from Kingdom Hearts 4, which was first revealed roughly 1,587 days ago and only resurfaced with a new trailer earlier this summer, per GamesRadar+.

Despite that trailer, no actual Disney worlds have yet been shown for Kingdom Hearts 4, leaving open the possibility that the D23 panel could finally reveal how Sora and company will interact with a Disney-owned setting this time around, whether through classic animated worlds or newer intellectual property.

Banners Appear Outside The Convention Center

Anticipation escalated further when Disney began placing promotional banners outside the Anaheim Convention Center in the days leading up to the event, TheGamer reported. Twitter user ScottGustin first spotted a banner featuring Kingdom Hearts 3's Sora and Mickey Mouse alongside the franchise logo, marking a rare instance of Disney actively advertising the series ahead of a D23 appearance.

TheGamer noted that the banner uses the same render of Sora that Disney used a decade earlier, during Kingdom Hearts' last full appearance at D23 in 2015. That year's event delivered major news for the franchise, including the reveal of the Big Hero 6 world, and organizers similarly promoted the series with signage beforehand. TheGamer suggested that Disney's willingness to invest in outdoor advertising for a panel, rather than reserving buzz solely for people already inside the convention hall, points toward something substantial being planned rather than a simple retrospective or a crossover tie-in such as a Fortnite collaboration.

Whether the choice to reuse the decade-old Sora artwork is a deliberate callback or simply a matter of Disney pulling from its archives remains unclear, TheGamer acknowledged, but the parallel to 2015 has fueled fan theories regardless.

A Long Wait For Fans

Kingdom Hearts fans have endured an unusually long gap since the franchise's last significant news cycle. GamesRadar+ pointed out that the series had previously been reported to have sold more than 38 million copies across its history, a figure that predates last year's Kingdom Hearts All-In-One Package, a bundle of re-releases, and this year's Kingdom Hearts Collection, another compilation aimed at bringing new and returning players up to speed before Kingdom Hearts 4 arrives.

That re-release strategy, paired with the newly disclosed billion-dollar sales figure, suggests Disney and Square Enix have been building commercial and marketing momentum toward Kingdom Hearts 4 for some time, even as the game's release window remains unannounced. Kingdom Hearts 4 is being built on Unreal Engine 5, is confirmed to include online multiplayer, and follows directly from Kingdom Hearts 3 and the rhythm spinoff Kingdom Hearts: Melody of Memory, according to details compiled by TheGamer.

GamesRadar+ also noted a somewhat ironic footnote to the franchise's rise: a former Disney CEO has previously said he could not fully recall why he approved the original Kingdom Hearts project decades ago, a reminder of just how unlikely the crossover concept once seemed before it grew into a billion-dollar property.

For now, fans following along online, whether through official D23 livestream coverage, clips shared by attendees, or outlets recapping the panel in real time, are watching for any indication of which Disney worlds Sora will visit next, and how soon Kingdom Hearts 4 might actually reach players. With the series' co-director and cast confirmed for the Deep Dive panel, and Disney publicly touting the franchise's billion-dollar status for the first time, expectations heading into the weekend's coverage are higher than they have been for Kingdom Hearts in nearly a decade.
