Arsenal Face Manchester City in Community Shield at Millennium Stadium With Rice and Saka Set to Return

Arsenal and Manchester City meet at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff on Sunday for the Community Shield, the traditional curtain-raiser to the new Premier League season, with Mikel Arteta confirming that Declan Rice, Bukayo Saka and Martin Zubimendi are all in contention despite having missed Arsenal's pre-season fixtures.

Kick off is at 3pm UK time (10am ET), with the match broadcast in the United States on ESPN and streamed on ESPN+, according to NBC Sports. Arsenal enter the fixture as Premier League champions, while Manchester City qualify as FA Cup winners under new manager Enzo Maresca, who has taken over following Pep Guardiola's departure.

Speaking at Arsenal's Sobha Realty Training Centre on Friday, as reported by Arsenal.com, Arteta said he had been impressed by his squad's condition after a shortened close season that followed the World Cup final. "I love the way the players have come back," Arteta said. "Most of them came back earlier than expected, really fit with all the testing and they all seem in great condition. The moment they start to look at each other and look at the squad that we have and what we are building, there is a lot of excitement around it."

Rice, Saka and Zubimendi had all sat out Arsenal's pre-season matches after returning from international duty, but Arteta said the trio trained with the group this week and would be involved against City if their conditioning held up. "They will be available, they trained with us today, they will train tomorrow and if they are in the condition that we expect them to be, they will be involved," he said, according to both Arsenal.com and the BBC. Arteta added that he had seen nothing to suggest lingering fitness concerns for Saka or Rice, noting that both players followed individual programmes during their rest period and that their recent training sessions had been "really good."

The news is less positive for Arsenal's defense. Jurrien Timber and William Saliba, who both picked up injuries over the summer, will miss the Community Shield. Timber, according to Arteta, is "progressing really well" and is back on the pitch as the club ramps up the "volume and load" of his training, though he cautioned there are "still a few weeks to go" before a return to full training with the squad. NBC Sports reported that Timber remains "weeks away" from a competitive return. Saliba's situation is more serious; NBC Sports reported he suffered a back injury while playing for France at the World Cup and will miss the start of the season, with Arteta describing it simply as "a long-term injury."

Arsenal's build-up to the new campaign has been mixed. The BBC reported that Arteta's side opened pre-season with wins over MK Dons and Girona before losing to Real Betis and Borussia Dortmund, and finishing with a 1-1 draw against Serie A side Como. Off the pitch, the club has been relatively quiet in the transfer market, though the BBC noted the arrival of Bruno Guimaraes as a move to strengthen the midfield. Asked about further transfer business with roughly two weeks left in the window, Arteta declined to discuss individual targets but stressed the club's ambitions. "You know I am not going to talk about an individual but what I can obviously tell you is the ambition of the club," he said. "It is big that we want to improve the squad, we want to evolve the squad, in order to achieve. We have detected some areas that they can be a strength in, that is what we are trying to do."

Manchester City arrive at the Community Shield with their own injury and fitness questions as Maresca begins his first season in charge. NBC Sports reported that Rodri, the reigning Ballon d'Or winner, is still recovering from a back injury and will miss the match, while Erling Haaland has only just returned to training following an extended post-World Cup break and remains a doubt. Winger Savinho is also uncertain because of illness, Maresca said, and Ryan McAidoo is dealing with what the manager described as a "slight shoulder issue."

Maresca was guarded when asked whether City might complete any transfer deals before Chelsea's stated 5pm deadline for bids on midfielder Enzo Fernandez, telling reporters, "Not today, to be honest," with what the BBC described as "a little smile" that left open the possibility of business being finalized just before or after the deadline.

Historically, the Community Shield fixture has been a tight affair between these two clubs and their recent opponents. NBC Sports noted that the last three editions of the match have all been decided on penalties: Arsenal beat Manchester City in the 2023 shootout, City defeated Manchester United in 2024, and Crystal Palace beat Liverpool last August. Sunday's meeting will be Arsenal's bid for an 18th Community Shield title in 25 appearances, while City are chasing an eighth shield from 17 attempts, according to NBC Sports figures.

With both squads still working players back from World Cup duty and long injury layoffs, personnel management is expected to shape the contest as much as tactics. NBC Sports predicted a 1-1 draw with City winning on penalties, pointing to Arsenal's uncertain fitness picture around key players against a City side featuring more new faces under Maresca. For Arsenal supporters weighing in on the BBC's live coverage, opinion on the season ahead was similarly split, with some fans naming Arsenal outright favorites for the Premier League title given the stability under Arteta, while others suggested Manchester United could emerge as the closest challenger amid transitional periods at rival clubs.

Whatever the result in Cardiff, the Community Shield will offer the first real test of how far both squads have progressed since their post-World Cup breaks, and an early signal of the fitness gambles both managers are prepared to take just weeks before the Premier League season begins in earnest.
