Christopher Abbott Reportedly Lands Professor X Role in Marvel's X-Men Reboot

Christopher Abbott Professor X casting reports are circulating ahead of Disney's D23 fan event. Multiple entertainment outlets say Abbott has landed the role in Marvel Studios' long-gestating X-Men reboot. The news was first amplified by industry scoopers MyTimeToShineHello and Beyond Reporter on social media. It was later corroborated by outlets including World of Reel and Mandatory. If confirmed, Abbott would take on one of the most iconic roles in Marvel's mutant mythology as the studio rebuilds the X-Men for the MCU.

According to World of Reel, Abbott has been Marvel boss Kevin Feige's preferred choice for the role for several weeks. The site described Abbott as a stellar actor best known for acclaimed independent films. He is now stepping into one of the franchise's most recognizable characters. Mandatory cited a report originally published by Vritti Johar on SuperHeroHype. It noted that Marvel Studios had kept the casting under wraps. This was even after The Hollywood Reporter's Heat Vision revealed that Abbott and Tom Pelphrey had both tested for the part.

A Late Twist After Early Skarsgard Buzz

The road to casting Professor X apparently took several turns before landing on Abbott. Early speculation had linked Bill Skarsgard to the role. But THR's Heat Vision reported that Pelphrey ultimately did not get the part. Mandatory described a dark horse contender emerging as the winner. That dark horse, per the latest reports, is Abbott. An official announcement was expected as soon as Saturday at Disney's D23 event. Marvel has historically unveiled major casting news for its upcoming slate there.

If confirmed, the casting would make Abbott the second-youngest actor to portray Professor X in live action. Only James McAvoy would rank younger, having played the character across Fox's prequel trilogy beginning with 2011's X-Men: First Class. That marks a notable departure from tradition. Professor X has typically been depicted as considerably older than the mutants he leads, both in Marvel Comics and in Fox's earlier film series. Patrick Stewart played an elder version of the character opposite McAvoy's younger incarnation in those films.

Abbott is not entirely new to the Marvel universe. He previously appeared as the character known as The Foreigner in 2024's Kraven the Hunter, according to Yahoo. That prior role makes him one of a growing number of performers taking on a second Marvel character in a different project. The studio has leaned into that practice as it expands its ensemble casts.

Adam Driver's Villain Role And A Growing Ensemble

Abbott's reported casting arrives alongside separate rumors that Adam Driver has joined the X-Men reboot as an as-yet-undisclosed villain. World of Reel reported this, citing additional reporting from The InSneider. The site said the villain is not Magneto. It floated Sebastian Shaw, leader of the Hellfire Club, as a possibility, though it stressed that no one has confirmed the character's identity. World of Reel noted that Feige has courted Driver for years. The site suggested the actor may have finally agreed to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe after multiple prior attempts to bring him aboard. That would mark a shift, given his reputation for gravitating toward projects led by auteur filmmakers rather than franchise tentpoles.

Should Driver and Abbott both be formally announced, they would join a cast that already includes several stars. Kit Connor is set to play Cyclops, Samara Weaving is cast as Emma Frost, and Sadie Sink will play Jean Grey, according to both World of Reel and Yahoo. World of Reel reported that additional casting announcements are expected in the near term. A release date is likely to follow, with the site speculating the film could arrive sometime in 2028.

Marvel has already begun laying narrative groundwork for its mutant-focused future through recent releases. Yahoo reported that Spider-Man: Brand New Day introduced Sink's Jean Grey alongside Tramell Tillman as X-Men villain William Metzger. The film also explored a mutation inhibitor built by Spider-Man, a plot device that could feed into future mutant storylines. Feige has previously confirmed that mutants will be central to the next phase of the MCU. Sink has said filming on the X-Men reboot is set to begin next year, per Yahoo's reporting.

The timeline for the broader mutant saga is also taking shape. The original X-Men cast from Fox's early-2000s films will reprise their roles first in this year's Avengers: Doomsday, according to Yahoo. The rebooted lineup will take over after that. The new X-Men film itself is not expected to arrive before Avengers: Secret Wars, which is slated for late 2027.

Behind the camera, Jake Schreier, who directed Thunderbolts, is officially attached to helm the reboot, World of Reel reported. The screenplay has passed through several hands. Michael Lesslie, known for The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes and Now You See Me: Now You Don't, revised an earlier draft written by Aaron Rabin and Zach Dean. According to World of Reel, the script has since undergone another rewrite. This time the work came from Beef creator Lee Sung Jin and The Bear writer and co-showrunner Joanna Calo.

The project is being framed as the X-Men franchise's major theatrical comeback since Disney's 2019 acquisition of 20th Century Fox. Fox's prior X-Men series spanned seven main films and three Wolverine spin-offs. That run effectively ended after 2019's Dark Phoenix underperformed with both critics and audiences, as noted by World of Reel. With Abbott reportedly set to anchor the rebooted team as Charles Xavier, Marvel appears to be betting on a younger, more contemporary take on Professor X. The studio hopes he can lead its next generation of mutants into the MCU's expanding Multiverse Saga.
